The Liverpool to Manchester line was the world's first exclusively steam-powered railway; and opened in 1830. It was also first to carry mail, have a full timetable and be double tracked throughout its length. 'Rocket' was the fastest steam locomotive of its time, built especially for the Liverpool-Manchester railway line.

Port Sunlight Sea Dogs

Port Sunlight Sea Dogs sing shanties and songs of the sea. Based in Merseyside, their music interests are steeped in Merseyside's proud traditions. These include Maritime, Folk, Irish and Liverpool's Merseybeat roots, choir and operatics, all stirred up in a pan full of Scouse humour.
Liverpool features in many shanties, a reflection of the River Mersey’s historic global, maritime importance. Liverpool’s docks, its ships and owners, its streets, its men and women, are immortalised in shanties sung by sailors and performers of all nations across the world.

National Beer lovers Day

12:00PM - 11.00PM

In 1828 retired cotton manufacturer John Lees had a twinkle in his eye. Or maybe he’d had a bad pint and wanted to get things right. He bought some land at Middleton Junction and started making beer.
In 1876 John Lees grandson John William, took sole control of the Brewery and changed the name to JW Lees & Co. He didn’t just keep his nose stuck in a mash tun either, finding time to become Mayor of Middleton twice.

And now? Well JW Lees has been passed down the generations and we’re now up to the sixth generation. William, Simon, Michael and Christina Lees-Jones joined Richard and Christopher at JW Lees in the early 1990s.
